This is an important prediction to make, as it allows us to make accurate predictions about x when x is very large. We can also use vertical asymptotes to approximate or compute functions that are not exact. For example, if we know that the function ƒ(x) = 1/x is asymptotic to √2 (which is 1), then we can approximate this function by setting ƒ(0) = √2 and ƒ(1) = 1.
